Fractional CMO vs full-time CMO

You have reached the point where you know marketing needs an owner. The only question is whether to hire a director full-time or bring in someone external for part of the time. The answer comes down to two things: how much marketing you really have, and how much you can spend on it.

Cost, no sugar-coating

A good full-time marketing director costs real money: a senior salary, plus employer overhead, tools, equipment and the time it takes to recruit. And before that person starts delivering, a few months pass.

A fractional CMO costs a fraction of that, because you pay for part of their time and a defined scope. With me, ongoing work starts from 8,000 zł net a month for the strategist role, plus a budget for the work itself. The full ranges are on the pricing page.

Availability vs breadth of experience

A full-time hire is yours for 160 hours a month. They sit inside the company, know every detail, and are there for every meeting. That is a real advantage, if there is enough marketing to fill that time.

A fractional CMO gives you something else: broader experience from many companies and industries. They have seen what works elsewhere, they bring proven solutions and a fresh eye. They will not fill 160 hours, but in the time they have, they think strategically and own the result.

Risk

A full-time hire is a bigger commitment. If you get it right, great. If you do not, parting ways costs you: a notice period, another recruitment round, a few months lost.

External work is lighter. With me the contract is open-ended, with no notice period on either side. If it works, we keep going. If it does not, we part ways. Less risk up front, easier to check whether it makes sense.

What to choose

  • Full-time, when there is a lot of marketing, permanently, and you can afford a full salary plus overhead. You need someone on site, fully available.
  • Fractional CMO, when you need a strategic head and someone who takes marketing on, but not yet full-time. You want to start fast, with less risk and a lower cost.

Many companies start with the external model, and after a year or two, once marketing has grown, add a full-time hire for execution. I also help structure and recruit that team.

If you are not sure which point you are at, read when to hire a fractional CMO or simply book a call. The full scope of the service is on the Fractional CMO page.
