Fractional CMO or an ad agency?
You have a good product and you feel marketing is lagging. The question comes up: an agency, or someone who runs marketing from the inside? This is not a question about price. It is a question about who owns the result.
What is the difference
An agency sells services: a campaign, graphics, social media management. It has a team and processes, but your company is one account among many. A fractional CMO sells ownership of marketing as a whole. One person steps into the company, sets the strategy and makes sure it happens.
In short: an agency executes tasks, a fractional CMO takes marketing on themselves.
When a fractional CMO is better
- Nobody in the company truly owns marketing and it gets done after hours.
- You have a technical product that has to be understood before it can be sold.
- You want one contact and one invoice instead of juggling five.
- You want someone who connects strategy with execution, not just delivers graphics.
When an agency is better
- You already have an in-house marketing team and need extra hands for a specific campaign.
- You are running a big, one-off project that needs a crew of people at once.
- You need narrow expertise for a short time (a large production, or performance on big budgets).
The downsides of both, no fluff
An agency has a team, so it does not disappear when one person is on holiday. But staff turnover means your company keeps being learned by someone new, and there is often no time to truly get into the industry. Sometimes you get a template.
A fractional CMO is one head. Full immersion in the company and your language is the upside, but one person cannot run a large video production and five campaigns at the same time. That is why a good fractional CMO works with a network of trusted contractors and says plainly what they will not take on.
And the cost?
An in-house team is several salaries a month plus equipment, licences and turnover risk. An agency can be cheaper to start, but it is paid for campaigns, not for the company’s marketing. A fractional CMO is one B2B invoice and one person accountable for the result. For many mid-sized companies, that is the cheapest way to have marketing run with a head on its shoulders.
In short
If you need hands for a specific job, hire an agency. If you need someone to take marketing on themselves and own the result, that is a job for a fractional CMO.
