Zero barrier to entry with AI: customers are the hard part

Five years ago building an app took a dev team and a serious budget. Today a weekend with AI tools is enough. Which is exactly why the product itself stopped being an advantage. You can have the best product in the world, but without customers it is worth nothing. And customers come from marketing, not from another feature.

The barrier to entry dropped to zero

The share of new code written by AI grew from 5 percent in 2022 to around 30 percent in early 2025, and the curve keeps climbing (study covered in Science). Engineers at Anthropic and OpenAI say openly that models now write practically all of their new code (Fortune). Add vibe coding, no-code and ready-made templates. If you have an idea for a SaaS, an app or a tool, you can build it faster and cheaper than ever.

So can your competition. Same idea, same tools, same weekend. When anyone can build a product, the ability to build stops setting anyone apart.

The best product without customers is worth nothing

CB Insights analysed hundreds of failed startups. The most common cause of death was neither technology nor the team. 43 percent failed for lack of product-market fit: nobody needed the product, or nobody ever heard about it (CB Insights).

The internet is full of great, dead products. Polished code, clean interface, zero users. Their makers believed a good product would defend itself. It will not. “Build it and they will come” works in baseball movies. In business, distribution works.

I learned this the hard way

Before AI wrote code, I co-founded Cleaners.Cloud, an app for booking cleaning services. Every line was written by a human, so I know first-hand what building a product costs and how expensive a mistake at the product stage can be. The product was ready, so I did my part: brand, profiles, campaigns, content. I reached over a million people. Traffic was high, conversion was not, because the product turned out too weak.

Two lessons stayed with me. First, the product alone is not enough, even with good marketing behind it. Second, you may believe your product is great, but only the market gets to verify that. The whole story is in the Cleaners.Cloud case study.

Building that product today would cost a fraction of what it did then. Market verification costs the same as ever: you have to reach customers and see if they pay.

Distribution is the new moat

If anyone can have a product, the game is about who reaches the customer. And reaching customers is a craft AI will not do for you on its own:

  • Positioning. Who you sell to, why, and how you differ from five similar tools.
  • Channels. Where your customers actually are and what they read there, instead of “we will be everywhere”.
  • Trust. Brand, reviews and content that answer the customer’s questions before they ever write to you.
  • Measurement. Which activities bring enquiries and which only spend the budget.

In B2B this matters twice over, because the customer checks you out first, and increasingly asks AI who to recommend. If you are not there, you do not exist.

What to do about it

If this is where you are, product ready, customers missing, another dev sprint will not change anything. A marketing plan will, plus someone who takes ownership of it.

At dabrowskimedia I do exactly that second, harder half of the job. As a fractional CMO I build the strategy, run the campaigns and create the content that brings customers to a finished product. One person instead of a whole department, from 8,000 zł net per month, without a full-time hire and without an agency.

FAQ

I have a finished product and zero marketing. Where do I start? With a diagnosis: who the customer is, where to find them and what they need to hear from you. Then the plan, then the work. My first month of an engagement is exactly that: audit and strategy, no burning budget in the dark.

Will AI not do my marketing too? AI speeds up content production and data analysis, I use it daily myself. But it will not decide who you sell to and what you promise, and it will not take responsibility for the result. The tools are available to everyone. The difference is who steers them.

How much does it cost? Ongoing work from 8,000 zł net per month, one-off projects quoted separately. Concrete ranges are on the pricing page.
