Marketing for a manufacturing company: where to start
Manufacturing companies usually have the same problem: a great product and no idea how to talk about it in a way that turns into enquiries. Trade fairs and referrals work, but online sits empty. Below is a practical plan for the first steps, no theory and no pushing ten channels on you at once.
Step 1: start with sales, not with posts
Before you publish anything, sit down with the sales team. Who buys, why, what they ask before deciding, what blocks them. In manufacturing the decision usually involves several people: an engineer, purchasing, sometimes the board. Marketing should answer their questions, not collect likes.
This is the diagnosis. Without it, every campaign is guesswork.
Step 2: show the product in action
The strongest material in manufacturing is video from the floor. A machine at work, the process, the people, the result. A B2B client wants to see that it works and that you do it well. One good product film then works for years: on the website, in the sales offer, in a campaign.
Add photos from the plant and a few simple technical materials that explain the product in the client’s language, not in catalogue speak.
Step 3: pick one or two channels, not five
You do not need to be everywhere at the start. In B2B manufacturing these usually work best:
- LinkedIn, where the decision-makers are and where you build an expert position.
- Google, because a client looking for a specific solution types it into search.
- YouTube as the home for product and how-to films.
You add TikTok or broad reach only when it makes sense for recruitment or employer branding. Better to run two channels properly than five badly.
Step 4: think about recruitment
Manufacturing companies often fight not for clients but for people: operators, engineers, staff. The same marketing that sells the product builds the employer brand. Show the team, the culture and what working with you actually looks like. It really does shorten recruitment.
What not to do at the start
- Do not start with “let’s post because the competition does”. That is a fast way to burn the budget.
- Do not spread yourself across five channels at once.
- Do not sell on emotion alone. In manufacturing, parameters, references and numbers carry the weight.
The next step
If you want someone to put this in order for you and take the whole thing on, from strategy to films from the floor, that is exactly my job. Take a look at the marketing for manufacturing companies page or book a call. The first month is always diagnosis and a plan, and only then the work.
